Over the ages, many cultures have used the practice of choosing a new name when moving from
childhood into life as an adult. Many Native American cultures used this practice, as well as,
many examples in the Bible itself. This change often symbolized the passage from childhood to
new responsibilities as an adult of the community.
In the same way, when we choose a new name at Confirmation, we are saying that we are ready
to accept new responsibilities as full members of the Christian community. As you choose your
Confirmation name, ask yourself how this name reflects the type of person you are, as well as,
the gifts you have, to share with your faith community. It could be the name of a saint whose life
and example you respect and wish to imitate, or the name you received at your Baptism. What it
might be, it should be meaningful to you!
