The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an experience of the gift of God's boundless mercy. In this Sacrament, our sins are forgiven, but we are also exhorted to "go and sin no more" (Jn 18:11) including extending that forgiveness to others who sin against us.
Jesus gave authority to His Apostles to forgive sins in His name. That authority is invested in our priests who administer the Sacrament. "And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”" (Jn 20:22-23)
The Church requires Reconciliation at least once each year, but many bishops and priests recommend once each month.
