Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a profound encounter with the boundless mercy of God. In this sacrament, our sins are forgiven, and we are called to heed Christ’s command to “go and sin no more” (Jn 8:11), extending that same forgiveness to others who may sin against us.

Jesus entrusted His Apostles with the authority to forgive sins in His name, an authority that continues in the Church through her priests, who administer this sacrament. As the Gospel proclaims:

“And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” (Jn 20:22–23)

The Church requires that the faithful receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once each year. However, many bishops and priests warmly encourage more frequent reception –  often monthly – as a grace-filled aid to ongoing conversion and spiritual growth.
