Your Confirmation Sponsor
As you mature in your faith, you will take on more responsibilities concerning your life with God. Now that you are looking forward to receiving the outpouring of the Holy Spirit through the sacrament of confirmation. You need to choose a sponsor who will help you grow as a spiritual person.
Who Should I Choose?
Your Sponsor must be or must have:
- A practicing Catholic
- Received the sacrament of Baptism, Reconciliation, Communion, and Confirmation
- Sufficiently mature in his/her commitment, and should be actively expressing it within the Christian Community
- Reasonably informed on current church teachings
- Someone who lives locally, or that you see frequently
- Some one who is NOT a parent or step-parent
When asking a person to be your Confirmation sponsor, please consider the following:
- You, the student preparing for the sacrament, should ask the person.
- Your parents or guardians may help you in your decision, but you should be the one to ask.
- When deciding whom to ask, think of the good qualities you would like your sponsor to have
- It is important to know why you asked the person to be your sponsor.
- In whatever way you choose to ask, make it personal. It is an honor to be asked to be a sponsor.
Choosing a Sponsor
Your sponsor should be a person who can travel with you on your journey to Christian maturity.
This person should really know you and be readily available to listen to your concerns and questions about your faith or about the Church.
