What is a Columbarium?

A columbarium is a sacred structure containing niches designed to hold cremation urns. The Catholic Church encourages the respectful burial of cremated remains in consecrated ground rather than keeping them at home or scattering them.

St. Joseph’s Columbarium offers:

  • A visible site for prayer and remembrance

About St. Joseph’s Columbarium


  • Location: St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chester, CT
  • Total Structures: 3 (with two additional structures planned in the near future)
  • Installation: The first structure is scheduled for installation in April 2026
  • Total Niches: 48 niches per structure
  • Design: Traditional and dignified, in harmony with Catholic values
  • Blessing: The columbarium was blessed by Fr. Arul Rajan Peter on May 10, 2026 according to Catholic rites


Set within the peaceful grounds of St. Joseph’s Cemetery, the columbarium offers a prayerful and serene setting for families, honoring loved ones today and for generations to come.

  • Niche Size: 12” × 12” × 12”
  • Suitable for cremated remains
  • A single niche is designed to hold two urns.
  • Durable, weather-resistant construction
  • Individual niche fronts suitable for engraving


Engraving & Inscriptions

(Inscription pricing is separate from

the niche cost)

  • Initial standard inscription: $395

(includes the inscription of one or both names, along with birth and death dates, when ordered at the same time)

  • Future name addition: $395

(If a second name needs to be engraved, down the road

as a separate request, standard inscirption rates apply)

  • Final Date inscription: $200

(If a name is already engraved and you need

only to return later to add a final death date)

All inscriptions must follow cemetery and diocesan

guidelines and are subject to final approval.


Niche Pricing:

  • All prices include Niche, opening/closing fees & Perpetual maintenance care
  • Bottom 3 rows: $2,500 per niche
  • Top 3 rows: $2,700 per niche
