Expectation for Parents
Parish religious education is important for children because that is where they make their first connections between their Catholic faith and their identity as people called to that faith. This Christian formation is not done in isolation.
The Catholic Church believes that parents are the first and ultimate educators of their children and that the role of the Parish is to assist them. To that extent, the following expectations for a successful religious education experience for your child have been established:
- Bring your child to class weekly
- Discuss the weekly topics from the class with your child and share your own insights about the topics
- Support your child in the completion of assignments
- Attend weekend Mass weekly with your child, as the ultimate form of prayer!
- Assist by attending and participating in the scheduled Youth Mass and Stations of the Cross
- Maintain open communication with your child’s teacher and Director of Religious Education
- Support the Safe Environment Program—working to keep children safe—at home, at church, at sports, etc.
- Live your faith as a waking example of your relationship with Christ, as the first and primary teacher of your child
- Volunteer for Parish activities as an example to your child of Christian service
- Pray as a family—grace before meals, the rosary, bedtime prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be), pray for others—the sick, the needy, family members, etc.
